Working with various partners across sub-Saharan Africa, we improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and preserve natural resource integrity.

IITA is member of the consortium implementing the “Root and Tubers for Agricultural Transformation project “in Malawi, funded by Irish Aid Malawi. The project aims to increase productivity, climate resilience, nutritional and quality of cassava, potato and sweetpotato production systems. IITA is leading the cassava component. 

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is now inviting applications from qualified candidates to fill the following positions;

DRIVER/FIELD ASSISTANT

Job Responsibilities

The Driver/Field Assistant will work as a member of the project team in Malawi

  • Drive official vehicles as assigned in a safe and courteous manner on local and international routes as required, at all times using defensive driving techniques.
  • Perform daily check of vehicle oil, water, tire pressure and other fluids, and verify safe condition of vehicle before departure on travel. Verify completeness of tool kit, first aid kit, spare tire, etc., daily
  • Perform necessary cleaning and washing of the assigned vehicle on a weekly basis.
  • Perform emergency repairs and maintenance as needed.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of vehicle as needed
  • Assist with field work as may be from time to time be assigned by the project staff during field trips
  • Maintain vehicle use log of all travel.     
  • Provide timely advice to the transport office of any vehicle requiring maintenance services.
  • To assist in any public awareness, campaign the cassava project may be involved in
  • Honesty and integrity always
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualification and skills required

  • Education: Malawi School Certificate of Education and above, possess a clean drivers’ licence (minimum class C), defensive driving certificate and some mechanic knowledge will be an added advantage
  • Experience:  At least four years driving experience, minimum experience of 3 years working with an international NGO, must be physically & mentally fit and healthy, minimum age of 30 years
  • Skills: Ability to read, write and speak English fluently, able to work under minimal supervision and be proactive and initiative, integrity, flexible approaches to work coupled with enthusiasm, commitment and energy, ability to work in a multi-cultural and multi-national environment, good organization and planning skills with effective time management skills, ability to perform multiple tasks and work under pressure with a wide range individuals and institutions, Team player,  maintenance of confidentiality at all times, advantage and kknowledge of computer applications (MS Word and Excel) will be also an added advantage
