Finance Manager

Financial Management


Working closely with and supporting the Head of Finance and Operations in effectively managing the finances (including budgets) of the Country Office, ensuring accuracy and deadlines are met.


Be the lead reference point on all financial matters in the Country Office, including formulating financial strategic direction and supporting the Head of Finance and Operations to assess implications of financial issues in the short and long term.


Develop, maintain and review procedures for processing income, payments, and payroll, monthly, quarterly and year end accounting, bank and cash management, advances and loans and financial policies relating to volunteers. Ensure effective data and knowledge management of all financial data. Ensure a system is in place to manage debt and to track invoices on a regular basis.


Ensure adherence to finance policies set globally and locally. Ensure that all staff members are aware of the policies.


Budget and Forecasting

With the support of the finance team, work with the programmes team, prepare annual budget, quarterly budgets and provide input to the Country Office Quarterly Business Review process.

Prepare budgets for fundraising bids which maximise cost recovery in line with VSO policies.



Internal and External Reports


Supervise the recording, classifying and summarising of the financial transactions of the organisation and ensure proper maintenance and update of accounting ledgers to ensure that the system provides the reasonable basis for an efficient and accurate reporting to both internal and external users and that it is compliant with internationally accepted accounting principles, legal and statutory requirements of Malawi.


Line Management, training and coaching

Manage the finance team, providing direction and coaching whilst also managing performance. Develop and manage a high performing team culture providing high quality advice, information, customer care and support services ensuring continuous improvement, positive communication and teamwork. Lead the team to deliver a high quality financial service to all stakeholders, ensuring an effective contribution to the country strategic plan.



Continually review and recommend the required finance structure to meet the needs of the changing grant portfolio.


Provide training and support to the finance team and programme teams to assist with budgeting, financial planning, monitoring and reporting.
