GOAL maintains close working relationships with the district authorities and relevant line ministries. 

General Description of the Role

The FO will be primarily responsible for ensuring the field Finance Office runs smoothly and that comprehensive and timely reporting takes place which help Senior Finance Manager and Financial Controller to produce monthly accounts. Key duties will include the maintenance of financial records, development of reports, and ensuring compliance with donor stipulations. The Finance Officer will also have standard duties as a member of the finance office as detailed below

The Finance Officer will be responsible for:

Support on financial issues relating to programme

  1. Payments
    1. Preparation of cheques and bank transfers in line with the organization policy
    2. Ensuring that payments that are received are logged in finance payment received book and are processed within the assigned period
    3. Proactively follow up on outstanding cheques
    4. Management of the cash office including receiving and paying of cash as well as ensuring that the payments are processed within agreed Service Level Agreements
    5. Reconciling training attendance sheets to payment sheets
    6. Preparing, holding and closing floats as required
  2. Month end process
    1. Participate in monthly cash book reviews as assigned
    2. Preparation of assigned journals
    3. Preparation of month end finance files
  3. Archiving
    1. Organising and maintaining the finance department archiving system ensuring at all documents are correctly archived as per GOAL standards
    2. Catalogue of finance files ensuring easy access when required 
    3. Ensuring that documentation received in finance is correctly recorded
  4. Other duties specified
    1. Undertake audit document preparation and otherwise facilitate audit processes.
    2. Provide information as and when requested by internal and external auditors
    3. Where relevant, preparation of Withholding Tax Deduction Certificates for Suppliers.
    4. Reconciliation of supplier statements
    5. Work with SFO as required to prepare VAT returns and follow up where necessary
    6. Random audit checks (and reporting of same to Finance Manager/Financial Controller) which may or may not involve field visits. Reporting any anomalies or suspicious transactions to Finance Manager or Financial Controller.
    7. Act as cover for other positions when assigned
    8. Any other duties as assigned by FC/FM/SFO

Requirements - essential

  • Bachelor of Accounting or  part qualified ACCA  
  • Fluent in English and Chichewa.
  • Good computer skills; Microsoft Office 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication capacities.
  • Commitment to work out-of-office hours when required.
  • Relevant previous field NGO experience in a busy Finance office.
  • Should be a self-starter and be able to demonstrate entrepreneurial capacity.

Requirements – preferred

  • Experience working with an international NGO.
  • Experience working on grants
