The Government of Brazil has been seeking to contribute to improving the Human Development Indicators in African countries. This cooperation is based on the important body of technical knowledge and solutions that can be immediately applied in countries that face similar challenges. The larger strategy of the technical cooperation provided by Brazil, which is not related to a welfare policy, profit making or commercial actions (tied-aid), is focused on institutional strengthening of partners, a fundamental condition for fast and effective transfer and acquisition of knowledge.
The Brazilian Government, through the Brazilian Cooperation Agency (ABC), with support from UNDP Brazil and Embrapa (the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation), and with a view to meeting demands from African countries that traditionally grow cotton, decided to negotiate the use of financial resources allocated by the Brazilian Cotton Institute (IBA) to projects meant to build capacities and transfer Brazilian technology related to cotton production, in technical cooperation initiatives.
Hence, at present, the Government of Brazil has three initiatives being carried out with African countries, namely, Cotton-4 + Togo Project, Shire-Zambezi Cotton Project, Victoria Cotton Project, in addition to six others in partnership with FAO in the Latin America.
The main objective of BRA/12/002-S003 - Regional Project for Strengthening the Cotton Sector in the Basins of the Lower Shire and Zambezi Rivers (Shire-Zambezi Cotton Project) is to expand the capacity of institutions and human resources (researchers, extension workers and leading farmers from Malawi and Mozambique) in using and disseminating cotton production technologies in small and medium-sized properties.
Therefore, the Project will make available the physical and institutional infrastructure required to providing partner institutions, connected to the regional cotton production sector, with the knowledge and means to validate and disseminate technologies, in addition to promoting the development of technical capacities for regional production of basic and certified cottonseeds.
In this sense, a Financial Administrative Assistant is required to provide support to the implementation of Project activities, whose duties are to be performed in the city of Lilongwe (Malawi), and during periodic visits to the headquarters of the Local Cotton Technology Transfer Unit - ULTTA, located in Zomba (Malawi).
