Gender and Governance Manager

ActionAid Malawi (AAM) is a locally registered non-governmental organisation under the Company’s Act 1984 as a company limited by guarantee and is an affiliate of ActionAid International, a federation of national organizations working in over 45 countries in Africa, Asia, America and Europe regions. ActionAid has been working in Malawi since 1991 and works in partnership with communities, community based organizations, civil society, social  movements, and governments across the world to fight and eradicate poverty, injustice and exclusion. We work with and support poor and excluded people in the struggle to demand and claim their rights. ActionAid’s work is focused around women’s rights, education and youth, food security, just and democratic governance, human security and in HIV and AIDS.

ActionAid Malawi in consortium with Centre for Civil Society Strengthening (CCSS) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare (MoGCDSW), will implement a 2 year project worth NOK12.5Million funded by The Norwegian Embassy in Malawi. The project is named ’50:50 Campaign Programme-Increasing Women Political Participation and its main outcome is ‘Towards improved promotion and participation of women in leadership and decision making positions in Malawi.The Project will run from 1st December 2017 to 30th November 2019. The Malawi Electoral Commission’s accredited gender focused NGOs, UN Agencies and Parliamentary Women Caucus will participate in the implementation of the project.

Job title: Gender and Governance Manager

Duration : Two (2) Years

Job Purpose 
The Gender and Governance Manager will be the focal person for women rights at the 50:50 Campaign Management Office in Lilongwe. She/he will provide technical advice to staff and partners with a view to ensuring that gender is properly mainstreamed in programming and delivering centric 50:50 campaign results.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and grounds gender justice principles within tie 50:50 campaign
  • Maps out areas of women’s rights support and coordination required in consultation with partners and staff
  • Work closely with the Team leader, staff members and partners to and ground gender justice principles within the 50:50 campaign
  • Designs & implements Policies, advocacy and campaigns
  • Provides support and value addition on women’s rights work by cross learning inputs and by connecting with expertise available outside of the organisation
  • Provides thematic inputs to support the Fundraising Unit in women rights based efforts
  • Contributes in the identification of entry points and development of new programme and project proposals related to women’s political participation
  • Contributes with good practices and lessons teamed from implementation of the programme


Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

  • Post Graduate in Social Sciences/Social Work/Women’s Rights or equivalent studies
  • Sound knowledge of women’s rights issues including gender equality and women’s political participation
  • Relevant experience of at least 4-5 years.
  • Adequate experience in working with elections management bodies and CSOs working on political empowerment of women in Malawi
  • Have strong communication, interpersonal and advocacy skills.
  • Good in writing and communication skills
  • Sound knowledge experience in policy analysis, campaigns and advocacy to promote women’s rights
  • Be updated on the discriminatory laws and practices that affect women’s political participation in Malawi
  • Proficiency in all applications of MS Office
  • Good team player and with strong skills for networking and alliance building
  • Willingness to travel as required
