Introduction

The Malawi Polytechnic (http://www.poly.ac.mw) would like to engage the services of competent and dynamic individuals to work as Laboratory Technician on a project based within the Polytechnic and College of Medicine Laboratories. The Malawi Polytechnic and the College of Medicine in collaboration with London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine will be implementing food hygiene and wash investigations for the SHARE research project.

Laboratory Technician 1 post, based in Blantyre, 10 month contract.                                

Job Summary

The Laboratory technician will carry out field and microbiology investigations as appropriate, which will include, but may not be limited to: receiving and booking in specimens, preparing specimens for testing and storage, documentation and record keeping.  The holder will be a registered member of the Medical Council of Malawi and act in a professional manner at all times in accordance with their rules and guidelines.

Main Responsibilities

  • Carrying out laboratory tests in accordance with research protocols (S.O.P.s) as set out by the Principal Investigator.
  • To be aware of, and work using the Quality Control protocols, both internal and external where appropriate set by the Principal.
  • Monitoring equipment at regular intervals according to set protocols where appropriate
  • Adhering to the principles of Good Clinical Lab Practice (GCLP).

 

Qualifications/specifications

  1. Diploma / Degree in Med Lab Technology or Biomedical Sciences .
  2. Good knowledge of information technology (I.T) devices.
  3. Fluency in Chichewa and English.
  4. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  5. At least 1 to 2 years’ experience working in a Medical / Research Laboratory
