Lean Data Research Specialist


Solar is a proven off-grid energy technology in Malawi. However there has been very low penetration of solar in Malawi at a household level. Zuwa Energy is a Malawian company that imports, distribute and sells state of the art solar technology. Through our unique Pay As You Go technology, our customers are able to electrify their homes by paying for their systems in installments for up to 21 months. This can be done via cash or mobile money. The core business of Zuwa Energy is to provide our customers with affordable and clean solar energy to meet their everyday energy needs for household and business needs. Do you love technology? Do you love working with data and developing insights to make strategic decisions? If so, you can join our team as a Lean Data Research Specialist. The Research Specialist will coordinate the company’s lean data monitoring and evaluation (M&E) plan, including reporting for internal and external stakeholders. The Research Specialist will work closely with other business units to drive the company to meet its business goals.

Purpose of Role

To provide ethical, strategic and timely insights to facilitate decision making and contribute to the company’s ability to best satisfy customer needs and communicate its impact. This will involve developing insights by collecting information on the energy needs of potential and current customers as well as data, on and from, our agents. Further to this, general  energy insights will be published in public reports for the benefit of other local and international stakeholders.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and consistently update Zuwa’s lean data monitoring and evaluation plan with guidance from the CEO and Director (Research and Global Partnerships) who is based in Sydney, Australia.
  • Responsible for ethical and timely (quarterly and annual) data collection targets across research hub locations identified in aforementioned plan. This will involve routine visits to locations and, in some instances, recruiting and training enumerators to assist with data collection.
  • Analysis of data from multiple research instruments e.g. sales dashboard information,  SMS surveys , focus groups and interviews to develop strategic insights that are consolidated and  conveyed to internal and external stakeholders through reports and presentations at regular intervals.
  • To provide senior management with clear, evidence-based recommendations based on insights from the field, through quarterly and annual reports. This will include “lessons learned” and “examples of best practice”
  • To work in close collaboration with colleagues e.g. Sales and Marketing Manager and Systems Manager to ensure that insights from the field are embedded into our core operations
  • Producing quarterly data sheets / newsletter with insights on energy in Malawi.


Desired Experience:

  • At least 1 year of experience in a research or monitoring and evaluation related role
  • Experience with both quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Proven ability to develop high quality reports for diverse audiences e.g. for lay-persons or research professionals.
  • Evidence of ability to meet targets and deadlines
  • Demonstrates awareness of research ethics


Required Knowledge, and Characteristics

  • A proactive, solution oriented mindset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills (both in Chichewa and English)
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Intermediate-Advanced proficiency with Word, Excel and SPSS.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a team player and ability to cultivate strong relationships with colleagues, customers and agents.
  • Passionate about conducting research ethically
  • Proficient in using internet services and social media
  • A Degree in Economics, Development or related Social Sciences that involve measuring impact. Candidates with proven research experience are preferred.
