The Feed the Future Ag Diversification Activity is a five-year project that contributes to USAID/Malawi`s Feed the Future goal of sustainably reducing poverty and stunting in eight districts of central and southern Malawi (Mchinji, Dedza, Ntcheu, Balaka, Machinga, Mangochi, Lilongwe rural and Blantyre rural). The activity fosters inclusive and sustainable growth of Malawi`s agricultural sector. The activity seeks to improve the nutritional status of women and children under five through a proven nutrition sensitive approach of layering agriculture and nutrition behavior change interventions in rural communities, while increasing the competitiveness of high value, nutrient-rich value chains through support for agricultural enterprises and increased access to markets and finance. The program is financed by the American people through USAID Malawi.

Objective of the Assignment

Outcome 3 – Nutrition focuses on promoting dietary diversity for women and children through integration of nutrition-sensitive agriculture targeting soybean, Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) and groundnut value chains.

The Activity intends to recruit Nutrition Associate to strengthen its Malawi Country Office Nutrition Component team to be based at its Lilongwe Office.

Position: Nutrition Associate

Reporting directly to Outcome 3 Lead the Nutrition Associate will be responsible for helping implementation for nutrition activities in the Zones of Influence by providing support to partners and beneficiaries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide support to partner organizations including cooperatives, village Savings and Loan groups and Care Groups to promote dietary diversification through production and consumption of nutrient rich crops
  • Support beneficiary households in practical food processing, preservation and good safety sessions focusing on the AgDiv promoted value chains and other nutritious crops to increase consumption of diverse nutritious foods, particularly the promoted Malawi six food groups among the beneficiaries in the zones of influence.
  • Provide technical support to micro-entrepreneurs and partners on soymilk processing and associated training in food safety and hygiene to ensure increase in production of safe food and marketing of nutritious foods by community groups and enterprises.
  • Assist in the identification of appropriate individuals and groups for promotion of nutrition through Orange Fleshed Sweet Potato (OFSP) production and backyard gardening.
  • Assist in primarily data collection for all AgDiv nutrition related interventions and compilation of monthly reports for submission to Technical Lead.
  • Ensure coordination and integration with key project components and cross-cutting themes such as production, gender, and resilience.
  • Participate in annual work-planning and monitoring to identify the best, cost-effective strategies for improving dietary diversity among women and increasing minimum acceptable diets among infants 6-24 months.
  • Ensure collaboration with partners for timely reporting and smooth running of the project activities to achieve set targets/goals
  • Draft activity reports – monthly, and prepares internal documentation as required – ensuring that Nutrition Component lessons learned and success stories by the project are properly documented and submitted to Nutrition Specialist/Lead
  • Conduct training and technical capacity building/awareness building for beneficiaries and partners
  • Prepare expense reports by collecting receipts for expenses and any other activity as requested by supervisors
  • Draft monthly and quarterly detailed program activity implementation plans (linked to budget) and ensure timely reporting
  • Assist with additional assignments in accordance with the needs of the project.

Required Education and Experience

  • Minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience in promoting, supporting, and facilitating Nutrition and resilient outcomes for an international organization or local NGO
  • Experience in working with rural community entrepreneur groups, conducting food processing and dietary diversification related activities for a USAID-funded project is preferred.
  • Minimum of Bachelor`s Degree in Nutrition or Food Science and Technology, Community Development or any related field with knowledge of the Nutrition issues from a recognized institution.
  • Must be a self-starter with demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Strong teamwork skills, including the ability to liaise, coordinate and communicate with other departments, partners and beneficiaries
  • Experience with active adult training techniques and methodologies with an emphasis on techniques for rural adults and those with low literacy levels.

Desired Skills, Competences and Knowledge
  • Oral and written fluency in English and Chichewa languages required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint required.
  • Must be well organized and capable of multi-tasking and meeting deadlines
  • Willingness to travel in-country and to the project`s zone of influence.
  • Good attention to detail and strong time management skills.
  • Familiarity with the political, social and cultural context of Malawi and how they impact on Nutritional related activities
