IITA established its office in Malawi in 1987 and is located at Chitedze Agriculture Research Station where is conducts a number of research activities.


The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is now inviting applications from qualified candidates to fill the following position:


Position : Research Associate (Adoption, Impacts, and Markets)


Location : Lilongwe



The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Research Associate to support IITA’s research and capacity building efforts in the areas of agricultural technology adoption, impact assessment, and markets and value chains. The Associate will work as a member of the social science and agribusiness research team in Southern Africa based in Lilongwe, Malawi.


Essential Duties

Under the guidance of the senior agricultural economist, the successful candidate will be involved in the following socio-economics research and capacity strengthening activities.

  1. Designing and conducting household and markets and value chain surveys;
  2. Compiling and managing an integrated socio-economics and value chain database for tracking the adoption and impacts of agricultural technologies and for assessing market and policy constraints and agribusiness opportunities;
  3. Data analysis and write-up of research reports, scientific papers, and policy briefs and other communication materials;
  4. Writing proposals and developing work-plans and budgets;
  5. Organizing project and stakeholders meetings and participating in scientific workshops and conferences; and
  6. Organizing and conducting training workshops for IITA staff and partners. Scientific rigor, initiative, ability to work independently, and an active interest in socio-economics research are desirable.


Required Qualifications and Skills

  • MSc Degree in Agricultural Economics or Agribusiness from a recognized university.
  • Proficiency with statistical software such as STATA.
  • Demonstrated ability to write research reports and journal papers
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Ability to work independently.
