Research Officer/Research Assistant – DRUM

Job Description

AFIDEP seeks highly qualified and self-motivated individual to fill the position as either a Research Officer for those with a Master’s degree in social sciences or Public Health studies, OR Research Assistant for those with a first degree in Bachelor of social sciences and at least two years of experience. The position is for an initial fixed-term of 2 years, renewable, based on performance and availability of funds. A competitive remuneration package will be offered commensurate with qualifications, skills and experience.

Project overview

(DRIVERS OF RESISTANCE IN UGANDA AND MALAWI (DRUM) DRUM is a consortium whose aim is to transform understanding of the drivers of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Eastern Africa, and design interventions to mitigate AMR spread by determining specific drivers of transmission. The project seeks to address how human behaviour and antibacterial usage in urban and rural Africa as well as to develop agent-based models that will enable the prediction of how these transmission pathways can be interrupted. Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Managing key informant interviews and focus group schedules
  • Managing interviews and focus group data and ensuring confidentiality
  • Conducting key informant interviews
  • Transcribing interview data
  • Inputting and analysing transcribed data
  • Attending research team meetings
  • Note-taking
  • Assist in the design, execution, and evaluation of research projects – including literature reviews, data analysis, and writing projects
  • Resolve day-to-day operational challenges encountered in study implementation
  • Support in the planning of study logistics and stakeholder meetings
  • Support dissemination of research findings
  • General research assistant work

Essential Skills 
  • Qualitative research skills are a mandatory requirement
  • Personal motivation, self-management, excellent time management skills, being detail-oriented, and have the ability to make progress without direct supervision
  • Strong typing, library research, and writing skills
  • Good command in written and spoken English, and Swahili
  • Excellent Communication, organisational and interpersonal skills required

Qualifications Requirements
  • Masters holders in Public Health may be considered for research officer level, depending on experience
  • Bachelor of Social Sciences degree from a recognized university
  • Experience in research project management
  • Experience in qualitative research skills, and data management
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office computer applications
  • Previous research assistant experience in a qualitative research study is a plus
