Job Description

The Malawi Epidemiology and Intervention Research Unit (MEIRU), operates in Karonga District, and Lilongwe City. The research programme is conducted in partnership with the Malawi College of Medicine, Malawi Ministry of Health and International partners. The programme is developing capacity in non-communicable disease research (including mental health), health informatics, epidemiology, and other areas. Research is done in partnerships and in highly conducive academic environments.

Position: Scientific Administrative Assistant

Scientific Administrative Assistant is sought to join the MEIRU administration team and play an important role in providing administrative support in delivery on research grants. To include grant application processing, contract and grant administration, ethics and governance documentation and publications submission. He! she will also be involved in activities associated with managing of research portfolios by performing some or all of the following: contracts and other agreements; reviewing proposals to ensure institutional compliance; administering and monitoring contract and grant awards, including compliance with regulations, terms and conditions; and sub award/subcontract issuance and administration.


The ideal candidate would possess the following characteristics, although it is recognised that potential applicants might fulfil each of these criteria to a greater or lesser extent:

Minimum qualifications

  • Diploma in Business Administration, Social Sciences, Public Health or related area

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Experience in office environment.
  • Skill in organising resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement goals.
  • Good spoken English and other relevant local language(s).
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to use a computer, including MS-Word, MS-Excel, MS-Access( or similar).
  • Ability to summarise information and provide progress reports.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of the team.
  • Able to work to complete work in a timely manner.
  • Able to maintain confidentiality.

  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, methods, and techniques.
  • Experience in contracts and grants preparation and management.
  • Experience with management of research projects.


Salary will be on Grade D of our scale, salary point will depend on qualifications and experience. Post is subject to the MEIRU terms and conditions of service.
