Recruitment of Social Behaviour Change Creative Process Pool of Experts

It’s hard to believe that today millions of Malawians still don’t have safe water and decent sanitation, resulting in immense suffering, disease and loss of productivity.

WaterAid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to safe water and sanitation. By 2030, we want everyone in Malawi to have clean water, sanitation and hygiene. We believe that sustainable development cannot be achieved in Malawi without the attainment of rights to water, sanitation and hygiene for all.

WaterAid is looking to hire a pool of development oriented experienced individuals to be part of creative teams to support the development of behaviour centred intervention packages for hygiene, sanitation and nutrition behaviour change promotion, to be implemented in community and institutional settings in rural and peri-urban areas. The expert pool will be drawn from different backgrounds (as outlined in the table below) and are expected to be available on demand in order to support intervention design processes over the course of the country strategy. Each creative team will work in close collaboration with subject matter specialists from relevant Government Departments, WaterAid Partners, WaterAid and community representatives from targeted intervention areas.

The role of the creative team is to support projects to translate research findings into a package of attractive fun and surprising activities and promotional tools / materials that will achieve the desired behaviour change. The team will be expected to create overarching brands with activities, inspirations, key behaviours and motivational insights sharing a common identity, that are linked to emotional drivers, but are also fun and engaging.

Outline of Required Expertise

Expertise Scope of Work Qualifications and Skills

Artists (5)

  • Drawing all graphic materials required for the intervention sessions.
  • Fine tuning campaign materials with the help of feedback from pretesting
  • Think tank and branding artist on brainstormed ideas
  • Creativity
  • Experience in using adobe illustrator, in design, Photoshop or other creative software for creating artistic illustrations
  • Experience with interactive media
  • Branding experience
  • Dramatist
  • Skilled in visual art

Script Writers Script writing, role playing and editing (5) 
  • Studio drama and jingle production
  • Development of campaign manuals
  • Preferable journalism or drama education
  • Experience in jingle production and script writing

Social Marketers (8)
  • Co-lead creation of interventions from a marketing perspective
  • Quality check and content curation on proposed social marketing approaches and adoption of changes from client, other relevant stakeholders and pretesting feedback • Training in social marketing
  • Strong communication skills
  • Good understanding of both rural and peri-urban urban social settings in Malawi
  • Experience in creating marketing products for social media
  • Experience in undertaking similar exercises

Academic Experts (4 )
  • Quality check on application of behavioural science research, theory and insight in all campaign materials
  • Quality check on curriculum design for campaign manuals • Academic qualifications in health, social behaviour change, nutrition or other relevant field
  • Experience in supporting behaviour change campaign design processes
