Communication Specialist

Reporting to the Head of Programme Quality Assurance & Accountability, the Communication Specialist will be responsible for helping to achieve overall country programme aims through developing and implementing an effective, targeted communications strategy. The Specialist will ensure that communications is an intrinsic part of the country’s ‘programme led approach’ and that communications strategies are built into all initiatives from the outset, through working closely with, and building external communication skills in, programme and funding teams. In addition, the role will be responsible for promoting and strengthening the WaterAid’s profile, amplifying key messages on media platforms and helping to influence decision-makers and donors.

Specifically, the Communication Specialist will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing the communications strategy Building visibility for WaterAid’s work in-country and globally.
  • Managing the communications budget in consultation with the Line Manager.
  • Using insight research into audiences, channels and messaging to target communications for maximum impact.
  • Leading media relations and managing media and digital communications channels √Coordinating and supporting the Malawi WASH Media Forum
  • Developing and producing compelling written and multimedia and editorial content and coordinating the delivery of high quality communication materials (e.g. media packs, talking points, Q&As, case studies, leaflets, factsheets, promotion materials, press releases, social media, videos, photos, reports, summary reports, news e.t.c.)
  • Producing WaterAid publications, including newsletters and magazines and ensuring WaterAid’s website, Social Media channels and other online platforms are regularly updated √Implementing capacity development initiatives for WaterAid and partner staff.
  • Supporting the Country Director and other members of the senior management team to effectively act as media spokespersons
  • Acting as brand champion Serving as a focal point to ensure effective communications coordination and collaboration between the Country Programme and other WaterAid offices.

To be successful, you’ll need:
  • A Bachelors’ Degree in a relevant discipline, preferably a master’s degree in Communications or Mass Media or Media for Development.
  • 5 to 7 years working in communications, media or a similar role
  • Demonstrable experience of writing and implementing communications strategies and using insight and analytics to determine priorities.
  • Proven experience of using multiple channels — print and digital — as tools for fundraising, engagement and influencing.
  • Strong, proven experience of working with journalists, preferably around development issues.
  • Computer-literate (MS Office, word processing, excel, outlook & spreadsheet packages including power point, and other media packages)
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of development issues and WASH issues in particular.
  • Excellent written and editorial skills, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to write tailored, effective content for specific audiences.
