Job Description

The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) is a center in the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health that works in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco. I-TECH has projects in more than 20 countries, and its worldwide staff work with local ministries of health, universities, non-governmental organizations, medical facilities, and other partners to support efficient, well-ordered health care systems that provide high quality care to all citizens. I-TECH Malawi provides technical assistance to the Malawi Ministry of Health and its partners to support human resource development, health systems strengthening, HIV care and treatment, and HIV surveillance for epidemic control.

I-TECH has been privileged to provide technical support to the Government of Malawi Ministry of Health (MoH), since 2008, through seconded senior Technical Assistants, Program Officers and Public Health Fellows. The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) was established in 2002 at the University of Washington in Seattle. I-TECH is funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Global HIV and TB (CDC-DGHT) under the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

I-TECH Malawi wishes to recruit highly qualified and experienced person to fill the following position

Data Entry Clerk for NHRL, Ministry of Health, Lilongwe, Malawi

Position overview

The Data entry Clerk will report to the Laboratory Advisor and the NHRL Lab Manager and assist in sample reception, labelling, entry into the Laboratory Information System, storage and retrieval. The primary purpose of the clerk will be to ensure high quality of data at the National HIV Reference Laboratory. Given that the sample reception workload is not high at the NHRL, the Data entry clerk will also assist in testing of samples for HIV recency, drug resistance or other surveillance samples at the NHRL.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Receiving samples at the reception from samples couriers and confirm sample is accompanied by appropriate documentation
  • Enter the samples into the NHRL Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Transferring of samples to the Repository Room and entering samples into the PC at the Repository Room
  • Physically parking samples in the freezers in the Repository Room
  • Collecting manually the selected samples from the freezers for analysis
  • Making sure that all the samples analysed have the results entered in the LIMS system
  • Making sure that results are reviewed and signed by the Manager
  • Process incomplete paperwork and/or rejected samples per SOP
  • Dispatching results to the requesting officers
  • Maintain all laboratory records.
  • Comply with the correct procedures, policies, and health and safety regulations.
  • Support in performing HIV-related laboratory analysis: HIV serology, HIV viral load testing, and genotypic HIV drug resistance testing.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the Manager that involve laboratory work.

  • Diploma or Degree in Biomedical Sciences from a recognized institution
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience in providing laboratory work
  • Registered with Medical Council of Malawi

  • Experience with electronic data collection tools
  • Should have an IT knowledge
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent attention to detail, time management skills and meeting deadlines
