Job Description

Saint John of God Hospitaller Services provides both residential and community-based mental health services, and services for children with a disability and/or special needs in the cities of Mzuzu, Lilongwe and their environs. This is done through inpatient, outpatient and community based mental health programs; rehabilitation and vocational training for people recuperating from mental illness, people with disability and other special needs; special education and community based rehabilitation for children with disability or epilepsy. The service also provides university level training in psychiatric nursing. general nursing, clinical medicine (psychiatry) and counselling.


Position Title : Home Craft Worker

Location : Mzuzu

Reports to : Centre Coordinator-UMOZA Department

Purpose of the post

Under the general supervision of the Centre Coordinator for Umoza, the Home Craft worker will be responsible for the provision of Home Craft Services to children, other clients and staff under Umoza program.

Responsibilities (which include, but are not limited to):

  • Develop domestic skills among Umoza children/ clients in consultation with centre coordinator and other team members.
  • Train clients in line with goals of Saint John of God -Umoza Program
  • Be responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all tools, fixtures and fittings involved in home craft instruction programme
  • Prepare meals for Umoza Children and deserving clients/staff.

  • Diploma in Home Craft from an accredited recognised institution
  • Minimum of two years post qualification experience
  • Those with Certificates/Advanced Certificates in Home Craft with at least five years’ experience will be considered.
  • Willingness to work with mentally challenged persons and their families.
  • Strict adherence to our Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy.
