Job Description

As a federal enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH supports the German Government in achieving its objective in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ invites applications from suitably qualified Malawians for the following openings at the MIERA Programme



The (Junior) Trade Expert will have the following responsibilities

  • Collection and analysis of relevant trade-related information
  • Ensuring the mainstreaming of the trade topic in the MIERA Programme
  • Support the Trade for Development Fund and MIERA management in the preparation and implementation of trade-related activities
  • Support the monitoring and knowledge management for the MIERA programme

Details of Tasks

Collection and analysis of trade-related data
  • to compile relevant trade data for Malawi and the region
  • to map and update information on relevant trade negotiations and agreements in the region
  • to analyse and prepare notes, talking points, and contribute to other relevant documents on changes in the agreements, laws and regulations their impact on Malawi’s trade performance
  • to build-up a network with government officials and other projects working on trade
  • to report regularly on trade-related topics at GIZ and MIERA meetings

Mainstreaming of trade in the MIERA Programme
  • to contribute to the integration of trade into the operational planning of the project to supports and oversee the development and implementation of trade-related project activities
  • to contribute to coordinating project activities with other development partners, e.g. UKAID, USAID, and the Enhanced Integrated Framework
  • to deal with the design, preparation and implementation of workshops, seminars and other events on issues connected with the projects areas of activities
  • to assist in identifying and recruiting national and international short-term advisors for capacity development of the partner institutions
  • to ensure the project is well informed about GIZ trade-related programmes and initiatives, including the trade in agnculture, trade facilitation, quality infrastructure, and special initiatives

Support the management in the preparation and implementation of trade-related activities
  • to lead and to manage trade-related activities in the programme to report regularly to the management and support on trade-related decisions
  • to be responsible for the communication about the activities, including updates and progress reports
  • to know the rules and regulations of GIZ and follow them strictly
  • to oversee all administrative and assist in financial procedures relating to the activities
  • to have a permanent and proactive communication with the HO Trade for Development Fund

Support of the monitoring and knowledge management
  • to collect from the start of the activity’s information relevant for an impact analysis of the project to follow up on relevant data for monitoring reports, including.
  • ensure baseline data are available for all indicators
  • organise data collection, including for updates on indicators o deliver data timely for the monitoring a link monitoring of trade-activities to the MIERA monitoring system to keep track of lessons learnt, including documentation of success and failure to learn and promote what brings trade forward
  • The technical expert is to perform other tasks, as the team leader hands over to him/her
Required qualifications, competences and experience

  • At least Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university in Economics, Trade, Business Administration, or related field

Professional experience
  • At least 3 years’ professional experience in a comparable position relating to trade
  • Experience in working with relevant governmental institutions, eg Ministry of Trade, Customs agencies
  • Knowledge of networking with stakeholders. including international development partners
  • Regional experiences, experiences in handing regional agreements are an asset
  • Very good working knowledge of ITC technologies (related software, phone, fax, email, the Internet) and computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
  • Very good knowledge of English


The junior expert for knowledge management and monitoring will have the following responsibilities.
  • Support monitoring activities and deputise for the responsible monitoring expert
  • Handling data in monitoring and process them
  • Linking monitoring and knowledge management
  • • Building up a working knowledge management system at MIERA

  • to get well acquainted with the monitoring of GIZ
  • to get familiar with the monitoring system of MIERA
  • to get familiar with MIERA and its impact matrix,

  • to understand the system and the data, which must be put into the system and manage the data
  • to represent the responsible monitoring expert and the monitoring unit on request

Handling data in monitoring and process them
  • to get acquainted with the data needed for monitoring
  • to know how to analyse and evaluate data
  • to collect data in order to be aware always of the progress of the programme regarding the indicators
  • be aware of positive and negative results achieved but not caught by the monitoring of the indicators
  • collect all relevant data needed for the progress report
  • feed the management with data for the steering of the programme
  • regularly report on progress and failures of the programme o contribute actively in all kind of programme and project progress missions
  • to become capable of
  • assessing data
  • processing data using data
  • explaining data o reporting based on data
  • processing data for communication purposes
  • to be able to give answers concerning the monitoring system at all times

Linking monitoring and knowledge management
  • to make regular duty trips in agreement with the management and the decentralized staff for the data analysis
  • to give feedback to the project managers and the programme management on a regular basis
  • to report at meetings on progress and on achievements in the projects from a monitoring point of view
  • to contribute to the development of print media, TV and radio programmes
  • to support and follow up the regular success story writing
  • to support and integrate the outcomes of all kind of programme events
  • to work closely together with the management and the team in order to have a good knowledge management at any time

Build up a working knowledge management system in MIERA
  • to acquire good working knowledge of all kind of GIZ documents related to knowledge management to get familiar with all relevant programme documents
  • to keep regular contact with the programme staff in order to get them on board for all kind of knowledge management affairs
  • to plan and organise knowledge management events (conferences, contributions of trainees and consultants, debriefings etc.)
  • to support the definition of knowledge management for new projects and new programme phases
  • to develop the knowledge management system in the direction of digitization and improvement of reliable data collection
  • to perform all kind of duties, the team leader hands over to him/ her
