MNH Quality of Care Officer

Job Description

In addition to our work on these areas, we also work on public financial and economic management and social protection.

GIZ invites applications from suitable qualified Malawians for the following opening at the Malawi German Health Programme (MGHP):

Position: Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) Quality of Care Officer

Reporting to the Quality Management (QM) focal person of Ntcheu district, the officer is responsible for.


  • Support the Quality Improvement Support Team (QIST) in Ntcheu District Hospital to oversee, coordinate and document QI initiatives Support Work Improvement Teams (WiTs) to test QI initiatives with a focus on antenatal, labour/ delivery and postnatal care including nursery and theatre
  • Identify and document best practices and disseminate across the departments and within the district
  • Support maternal and perinatal death reviews including the implementation of action points
  • Promote audits of patient records including partographs to identify quality gaps and improve patient documentation
  • Facilitate mentorship sessions to improve clinical skills in MNH
  • Support capacity building of front line health workers in QI tools and techniques
  • Support selected health facilities to implement and document Q1 projects
  • Perform other duties and tasks at the request of management.

Required Qualifications, Competencies and Experience.

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and Midwifery or Clinical Medicine.

Professional Experience

  • Between 6 months and 2 years professional experience in maternal and newborn health, i.e. experience working in maternity, implementing QI initiatives, reviewing maternal and neonatal deaths

Additional Competencies
  • Good working knowledge of ITC technologies Good communication, presentation and writing skills
  • Experience analyzing and using MNH and MDSR data to improve quality of care is an added advantage
  • Basic experience with accreditation processes and COHSASA standards is an added advantage
Duty station

The duty station is Ntcheu District Hospital with occasional travel to other selected health facilities in Ntcheu District,

Employment contract

The employment will be from 1st January till 31st July, 2020 with a possibility of an extension depending upon availability of resources and performance.
