Job Description

Malawi Institute of Journalism, a leading journalism training Institution in Malawi requires the services of an Online Sub — Editor tenable at its Secretariat in Blantyre.

Purpose of the role

Reporting to the News Editor, the Online Sub- Editor shall be responsible for gathering, writing and editing the news content of all MU online sites, and also ensuring quality control oversight of all website content.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Lead online news coverage and supervise the online team
  • Take responsibility for the news areas of all MIJ online sites, ensuring consistent high quality and good story writing.
  • Timely upload news and graphic (multimedia) content.
  • Hold regular meetings with online reporters and assign them to research and cover news stories and features.
  • Personally take a significant part of the research and writing, while taking responsibility for checking and subbing the work of online reporters.
  • Originate new ideas and propose ways to pull together or link stories thematically and geographically, and to add in depth coverage on issues.
  • Maintain close working relationship with the News Editor to keep abreast of the latest news and developments.
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to MIJ FM’s Editorial Policy.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

The ideal candidate must possess the following:
  • A Degree in Journalism or its equivalent obtained from a recognized institution.
  • At least three years of on line reporting experience.

  • A sense of confidentiality, sound work ethics such as honesty and trustworthiness
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
