The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a fourth Public University established by the Government of Malawi in December, 2012.The University is situated in the beautiful highlands of Thyolo District about 27 kilometres East of Blantyre City. It has four Schools: Malawi Institute of Technology; Ndata School of Climate and Earth Sciences; Academy of Medical Sciences; and Bingu School of Culture and Heritage. The University, in partnership with Virginia Tech (U.S.A) is establishing the African Drone and Data Academy (ADDA) in Lilongwe, Malawi beginning 15th September, 2019. An exciting job opportunity has arisen at the University for suitably qualified and experienced individual to fill the above position.
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
This job exists to assist in the effective and efficient delivery of structural related services in the University.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Projects Engineer shall be expected to perform but not limited to the following duties.
Undertaking feasibility study for construction sites including Geotechnical surveys and earth-works designs and levels for proposed sites
Developing engineering briefs for projects to apprise management on the structural viability of projects
Designing and drawing of structural drawings for all University projects for tendering and construction purposes
Supervising of all University Major and Minor Projects.
Advising on the suitability and strength of construction materials including interpreting test results for materials on a construction site
Quantifying and specifying all requisite structural materials for construction and inclusion into Bills of Quantities (BoQs) in compliance with the minimum standards of quality
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Must possess a minimum of a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognised University
At least 3-5 years of practical experience working under the supervision of a registered structural engineer. Being a registered Structural engineer will be an added advantage
A Self starter and pro-active individual requiring little or minimal supervision.
Willing to work under extreme pressure and able to react to emergency situations even at odd hours and devise innovative solutions in such instances.
Ability to undertake land surveying tasks
Must have specialized knowledge to analyse and solve complex problems
Able to draw and design using CAD based software (AutoCAD a must)
Ability to schedule complex works using Microsoft Project software
Analytical and problem solving skills
Effective verbal and written communications skills
Computer literate and competency in spreadsheets and word processing programmes.
