THE SALVATION ARMY MALAWI TERRITORY
MCHINJI ANTI HUMAN TRAFFICKING CENTRE

The Salvation Army as a church and Charitable registered organization and a member of CONGOMA, Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) and Malawi Council of Churches (MCC) has among its spiritual mission programs endeavoured into social development services to help complement to government efforts at large. There are several interventions and programmes that the church engage in to meet the needs of the communities and the society today to fully translate a practical faith obligation of Heart to God and Hand to man. Many lives in Malawi have been changed and transformed as the Army rolled up its sleeves to meet the needs of the people over the last 45 years in Malawi since its establishment.

About the Project
The Salvation Army has not been silent on the delinquency of human trafficking, particularly on child trafficking. Through the Mchinji rehabilitation social centre, children that are exploited through various forms of child abuse and exploitation such as child labour, sexual exploitation and domestic servitude are rescued and rehabilitated at the centre for a few months before they are reunited to their families. By community mobilisation, sensitisation and community child protection teams (CPT) established and trained, the communities have been empowered to identify, respond with issues of child trafficking around their communities. Various relevant and concerned government departments, offices, NGOs and stakeholders have been partnered to help reduce the problem in networking with The Salvation Army centre in Mchinji. The centre has partnered with UNICEF, Norwegian Church Aid and main stream of government arms on policy making and closely worked with community to mitigate child trafficking issues through awareness and advocacy for policy making on child protection policies etc.



Position: Security Guard



Position Description

Your role is vital in protecting both staff and children from unnecessary visitors at the centre and detecting and observing children behavior to deter children from running from the centre etc. Reporting to the Centre Management.


Key responsibilities

  • Securing the centre so that it is protected from potential burglars and unwanted guests Verify that visitors have business at The Salvation Army. If necessary, ask a staff member before the visitor enters.
  • Ensure that the visitors go directly to the reception.
  • Record visitors in log book
  • Patrol the centre premises/perimeter on a regular basis and carry out inspections in the centre,
  • Observe for signs of crime or disorder and investigate disturbances
  • Act lawfully in direct defence of life or property. Apprehend criminals and evict violators.
  • Take accurate notes of unusual occurrences.
  • Preventing losses and damages by reporting in detail incidents to Centre Management.
  • Ensure that there is another staff member providing security during break
  • Ensure The Salvation Army vehicles remain clean each morning. Maintain dean and tidy grounds: this includes the sweeping up of leaves, cutting and watering of the grass, looking after the flower beds, and picking up all rubbish
  • Support Centre Management in any critical incidents (i.e. if a child tries to run away from the centre)
  • Any other tasks as assigned by the Centre Management , or immediate supervisor


Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience Knowledge providing security services
  • Knowledge of legal guidelines for area security and public safety.
  • Former Army or police employee is added advantage.


Skills and Qualities

  • Good report writing skills.
  • Excellent surveillance and observation skills.
  • Training in First Aid and self-defense,
  • Demonstrable safety consciousness.
  • Connection to Malawi Police Services highly advantageous.
