Job Description

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a not-for-profit institution that generates agricultural innovations to meet Africa’s most pressing challenges of hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and natural resource degradation. Working with various partners across sub-Saharan Africa, we improve livelihoods, enhance food and nutrition security, increase employment, and preserve natural resource integrity.

IITA is inviting applications from qualified candidates to fill the following position.


The Station Accountant is responsible for designing and implementing a sound financial management and control system following IITA’s standard operating procedures. He reports directly to the Head of Finance and Administration, Southern Africa Regional Hub, in terms of policy direction and major work plan, and to the Station Administrator for day to day operations of the station.

Major Duties and responsibilities

The major duties and responsibilities of the Station Accountant are as follows:

  • Assist the Station Administrator in the preparation of the station’s capital and operating budget
  • Check budget codes to ensure that all transactions are correctly booked to the correct budget codes
  • Submit weekly and monthly financial reports to the Station Administrator for review.
  • Review annual and quarterly projects budgets and financial reports to ensure that all transactions are correctly booked
  • Maintain an Imprest Account at the station, making sure The Station doesn’t run out of cash
  • Maintain an Advance register and monitor outstanding travel and cash advances monthly
  • Reconcile all balance sheet accounts
  • Ensure prompt payment of government taxes and other suppliers
  • Manage banking transactions for the station, including preparing bank transfer requests and other letters to the bank; submitting them to the bank, monitoring transfers, requesting bank statements from the bank
  • Prepare monthly reconciliation of bank accounts, and cash for review and approval and other reports as may be required by Regional Finance officer
  • Prepare/Check expense claims return for accuracy and compliance to IITA policies and procedures
  • Supervise other Accounts staff Monitor and ensure all expenditures of funds are made in accordance with IITA procedures.
  • Ensure documentation relating to payments are duly approved in accordance with IITA procedures
  • Maintain all necessary accounting records (electronic and hard copies)
  • Continuously improve systems & procedures to enhance internal controls to satisfy audit requirements.
  • Undertake any other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor.

Educational Qualifications and Experience Qualifications
  • A Qualified Accountant with a good bachelor’s Degree in Accountancy and a Professional Accounting Certificate such as ACCA, CPA or its equivalence.
  • A minimum of five years post-qualification work experience in financial and accounting work, solid experience in budgeting, planning and reporting on large development projects, especially in an International Organization.
  • Good computer skills in common word processing (MS Word), spreadsheet (MS Excel), and accounting software.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of the Oracle accounting software in use by the program would be a distinct advantage.
  • Working English language skills in both writing and speaking.
  • An understanding of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • A member of Accountants Board. Please indicate the membership number.
  • Self-starter and be prepared to work under very minimum supervision.
