Job Description

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is a not-for-profit institution that generates agricultural innovations to meet Africa’s most pressing challenges of hunger, malnutrition, poverty, and natural resource degradation. IITA is inviting applications from qualified candidates to fill the following position.


Under the supervision of the project coordinator and with backstopping from the technical leads for soybean, cassava, and aflatoxin management, the Technology Transfer Specialist will primarily be responsible for the promotion of IITA’s technologies using the farmer field school and related approaches under the project ‘KULIMA Promoting farming in Malawi: Improving the access to and use of agriculture research innovations by Malawian farmers (KULIMA)” The phase 2 of the KULIMA project will be implemented for a period of 2 years (January 2020 to December 2021).

Essential Duties

  • Participate in the project workshop and planning meetings with other CGIAR centers
  • Contribute to the technical course content for farmer field schools (FFS) training modules (seed multiplication, protocols, agronomy, evaluation, data collections).
  • Establish study plots at 3 rural training centers (RTCs) and outreach stations for the practical training of Master Trainers.
  • Contribute to the training of Master Trainer at the 3 RTC and outreach stations.
  • Conduct further research on the selected technologies, innovations and practices.
  • Organize field days, training/orientation programs and exhibitions in collaboration with project partners and disseminate information on improved technologies/innovations.
  • Provide advisory services on technologies, innovations and practices to selected producers/enterprises.
  • Support concrete partnerships for sustainable planting material supply systems.
  • Train and provide technical backstopping to multipliers of cassava, soybean and cowpea for planting material in KULIMA districts.
  • Contribute to project quarterly and annual planning meetings and budgeting process by furnishing timely information on project activities.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly technical reports of project activities.
  • Undertake any other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications and Skills
  • Master’s Degree in Agronomy or related fields from a recognized university.
  • Minimum of 3 years in agricultural research and extension
  • Strong computer science/information management, data management, and statistical analysis skills.
  • Ensure that planned activities are undertaken on schedule and assist assigned staff on site to accomplish their duties timely.
  • Train subordinates in field experimentation, data collection and analysis;
  • Assist in organizing and conducting training workshops and fields days with farmers.
  • Carry out any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisors

  • Strong self-motivation and ability to, make decisions, and effectively solve problems.
  • Self-confident to follow instructions and work independently when necessary,
  • Excellent personal interaction skills required for fostering teamwork, enhancing a good working environment, and effectively developing strong internal and external working relationships with a diverse group of people.
  • Strong communication skills in spoken and written English
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Be available to work outside office hours and for extended hours where necessary.
