Location: Lilongwe, Malawi

Travel: Up to 80% (domestically)

Reports to: Program Manager

Duration: End February 2021


The European Union (EU) and the German Government have jointly commissioned GIZ Malawi to implement the Program KULIMA More Income and Employment in Rural Areas of Malawi (KULIMA MIERA), which aims to link small-scale producers, cooperatives and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to formal and structured marketing channels. The gained access to higher-value markets is expected to create an enabling environment for rural income and employment growth.

In this context, TechnoServe — a nonprofit organization developing business solutions to poverty — was selected to implement the Strengthening Malawi’s Oilseed Value Chains Through the Private Sector Program, which seeks to support small and medium Malawian oilseed processors and their affiliated smallholder farmers with the aim to improve the viability of their businesses, the sustainability of their farms, and their business linkages.

TechnoServe is looking for a Field Operations Specialist (FOS) to lead activities supporting targeted smallholder farmers under this program.

The Position

The Field Operations Specialist will help design, implement, and monitor program activities targeting smallholder farmers. In particular, activities which aim to a) facilitate their access to knowledge and technologies to improve the sustainability and economic viability of their farms, b) increase their capacity to create well-functioning and empowered farmer groups, and c) link them to markets.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the FOS is expected to:

  • Help Identify lead farmers and demonstration plots to establish strong learning centers for farmers;
  • Periodically visit learning centers to ensure availability of resources and continued engagement from lead farmers to effectively disseminate climate-smart/conservation agriculture practices;
  • Supply practical knowledge to lead farmers on climate-smart/conservation agriculture practices;
  • Assist in the timely procurement of eligible productive resources for smallholder farmers;
  • Assist In the recruitment of expert consultants and the effective delivery of trainings to lead farmers;
  • Establish and maintain good connections with local stakeholders (including extension workers, traditional leaders, and civil society);
  • Assist farmer groups and/or cooperatives in building structured and well-functioning organizations to strengthen their ties to processors and other partners;
  • Help strengthen the business links between farmer individuals/groups and their processor;
  • Raise proactively key activity risks and issues of concern to the Program Manager;
  • Support the definition of dear and measurable activity indicators meeting achievable targets related to farmers;
  • Take part in the establishment and implementation of a simplified, efficient, and coherent monitoring system for collecting and transferring field data.

Required Skills and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in agronomy, sustainable agriculture, and/or related discipline;
  • Experience in conservation agriculture, land or water management, integrated landscape management, or community engagement would be a strong attribute;
  • Knowledge of the Farmer Field School concept and its practical implications;
  • Demonstrated experience improving the productivity and sustainability of smallholder farms;
  • Demonstrated experience creating well-functioning and empowered farmer groups and/or cooperatives;
  • At least 5-6 years of experience in sustainable crop production, preferably on oilseeds in Malawi;
  • Ability to engage and advise different stakeholders, including farmers, consultants, extension workers, and traditional leaders;
  • Ability to design and carry out task under minimal physical supervision;
  • Willingness and ability to travel often to the field;
  • Good computer skills In Office software (Excel., Word, PowerPoint);
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken Chichewa; Good communication skills In written and spoken English; Knowledge of Tumbuka is a plus;
  • Hold a valid driver’s license.
