Global Fellow/Medical Advisor (Malawi)

Job Description

Operation Smile is an international medical charity with a presence in more than 60 countries, whose global network of thousands of credentialed medical volunteers is dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children.

Founded in 1982, Operation Smile has provided over 220,000 free surgical procedures to children and young adults with cleft lip, cleft palate and facial deformities.

Operation Smile expanded its reach to Malawi in 2012.

Since then it has provided free surgery to over 1,300 Malawian Children and adults.

It has also provided training to more than 500 health care professionals.

Under the Cleft Free Malawi Project, Operation Smile Malawi seeks to recruit a Global Fellow/ Medical Advisor.



The Global Fellow will work directly with the local project team supporting the project in Malawi.

This individual will be a key support in monitoring medical quality, providing oversight, and relaying concerns to appropriate stakeholders in Malawi’s Cleft Free project.

Additionally, the Global Fellow will support local medical staff and be responsible for building relationships with key hospital personnel.

This role will also support the selection and implementation of relevant education and training programs.

The Global Fellow is expected to travel domestically or internationally as needed.


  • Support hospital assessment processes to determine capabilities in regard to the 4S model; stuff, space, staff and systems
  • Work alongside OSI and local project team to identify education and training needs.
  • Support with training/curriculum development and training execution when applicable
  • Provide medical expertise and oversight to all aspects of the project to ensure patient needs are met and surgical implications are framed with safety and quality in mind
  • Serve as a peer for local healthcare providers to engage them in the project, trainings, research, etc.
  • Monitor medical quality of projects at all times
  • Support with analysis of project data and other key findings as need
  • Responsible for articulating medical concerns to the local project team as needed

  • MBBS Qualifications.
  • Preferably, but not required, consultant level clinician with experience in anesthesia, surgery, or pediatrics
  • Experience, interest, and/or relevant course work in public/global health
  • Experience working in health systems as a clinician, volunteer, researcher, etc.
  • Experience with research and writing at an academic level.

  • Excellent oral and written English, additional language skills preferred
  • Must have excellent organization and time management skills and be able to prioritize requests efficiently and effectively
  • Approachable personality with ability to engage and train local health care providers
  • Must be a motivated individual with proven ability to lead, coordinate, and facilitate projects and teams.
  • Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally on an as needed basis.
