Job Description

Baylor College of Medicine Children`s Foundation Malawi (BCM-CFM) is a not-for profit organization partnering with the Government of Malawi in the health sector. The mission is to improve the health and lives of HIV-infected children and families through high quality, high impact, ethical, state-of-the-art, comprehensive care and treatment, training of health professionals, and clinical research, Baylor-Malawi has an international reputation for innovative, evidence-based HIV service delivery programming.

The Baylor-Tingathe program was designed in 2008 to respond to suboptimal uptake of PMTCT and pediatric HIV services in Malawi. The program seeks to support Malawi in reaching the ambitious UNAIDS 90-90-90 goals, by improving the identification of HIV-positive persons, timely treatment initiation, and long term engagement in care. The program is funded by USAID, and is currently operating in 7 districts in Malawi. Baylor-Malawi is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of:


POSITION: Laboratory Technician



CONTRACT DURATION: 1 year (renewable)

STATUS: Full Time (40 hours per week)

REPRTS TO: Laboratory Manager

DUTY STATION: Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH)


POSITION DESCRIPTION


The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for carrying out laboratory analyses for HIV/AIDS related services. Laboratory technician will be under direct supervisory of the District Medical Coordinator (Tingathe) and District Laboratory Manager (MOH). This position is based full-time at the district hospital Laboratory. She/he provides technical support to the District Laboratory Technicians and ensures quality of laboratory services` strengthening activities carried out under Tingathe.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing direct support for viral loads EID sample management and TB labs as needed at district level
  • Building and strengthening capacity of Laboratory Technicians in the management of Viral Loads EID sample management and some rural hospitals and health centres as need arises
  • Providing support for management of stocks of the VL, TB, and EID supplies at district hospital and health centres
  • Providing mentorship, supportive supervision and on-job training to fellow laboratory technicians and staff at district level health facilities with a focus on new trainees
  • Assisting with development of guidelines and SOP`s
  • Identify service gaps and developing remediation plans
  • Monthly reporting

COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
  • Diploma in Laboratory Technology
  • 2-3 years` experience at Laboratory Technical (TO) level
  • Familiarity with HIV-related laboratory reagents and standards operating procedures for HIV-related laboratory services management in line with the national EMLS
  • Computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Fluent in English and Chichewa
  • Previous experience with HIV programs preferred
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written)
  • Integrity and professionalism
  • Able to contribute to a positive enriching work environment
  • Team player
