And it's all delivered through the media and mobile tech they use every day – from apps that build skills, to TV dramas that explore vital issues, to magazines written by girls.

Context of Role

We have an opportunity for an experienced Research and Evidence Manager to join us on a 6 month contract basis. You will need to have a primarily quantitative background to support with commissioning and delivery of research to inform the content development of the Zathu brand and its products, monitor the performance of the Zathu brand and to evaluate its impact.

Key to the role is the design of quantitative national/district representational surveys, setting sampling frameworks and approaches, overseeing and provision of quantitative technical expertise in enumerator trainings and data collection and quantitative data analysis.

The role will also support on report writing and donor reporting, and dissemination of research to internal stakeholders. You will work closely with the Senior Manager for Evidence to technically quality assure research, manage external agencies, capacity build the quantitative skills of other team members and support delivery of Zathu’s evidence strategy. You will also play a key role in informing media and behaviour change strategies and establishing evidence of outcomes for Zathu, which requires the ability to work across different teams in Girl Effect Malawi. From design through to dissemination, all research within Girl Effect requires cross-functional working with colleagues across Gender, Brand, Girl Networks, Connectivity and Relationships teams.

What You’ll Do

Leadership and management: 

  • Manage external research agencies and supervise external consultants, as required,
  • Provide technical support to Malawi Evidence staff on research, monitoring and evaluation projects 
  • Oversee a portfolio of projects and ensure that project deliverables are managed and delivered timely, to expected standards.
  • Management of budgets for specific projects

Research, monitoring and evaluation: 

  • Liaise with different teams to ensure that research is fit-for-purpose, girl-centered and appropriate for different cultural and social contexts 
  • Lead on assuring data management, analysis and reporting from quantitative studies to ensure that research meets the highest quality standards.
  • Ensure research effectively generates insights for different end-users across Gender, Brand, Girl Networks, and other Products 
  • Produce a range of reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders, including donors
  • Develop and manage specific monitoring methodologies, such as data collection via the Zathu brand ambassadors using ODK
  • Support on the development of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies
  • Conduct literature reviews and analysis of secondary data
  • Carry out quantitative data management, including data cleaning, deriving of scales, descriptive statistics and advanced analysis such as regression.

Learning and sharing: 

  • Work closely with the Senior Evidence Manager to ensure engaging approaches to sharing of insights from the Evidence team to increase accessibility and uptake of data and findings
  • Build on findings to continually refine and develop Zathu’s measurement frameworks for better evidence and understanding of performance and impact.
  • Ensure that insights are accessible and promote research uptake for strategy development 
  • Present and share insights back with brand, gender creative and production teams across Girl Effect Malawi

Who You Are

Essential:

  • Degree in social sciences (sociology, economics, international development, psychology, epidemiology or similar);
  • At least four years’ full-time experience in social or commercial research.
  • Experience in quantitative research tool development, fieldwork, data analysis and reporting
  • Experience using SPSS;
  • Experience with cross-sectional survey data sets;
  • Previous experience implementing quantitative analysis methods, including Chi-squared, T-tests, ANOVA, ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions and maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE);
  • Demonstrated skills in producing high quality, innovative and engaging research presentations and briefings for diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated skills in report writing and research dissemination
  • Experience in working with external research agencies and consultants
  • Interest in Girl Effect’s research areas of gender, youth, behaviour change and media;
  • Excellent written and fluent spoken English.

Desirable:

  • Experience with survey design and sampling
  • Experience with advanced quantitative analytical approaches, such as time series analysis structural equation modeling, hierarchical analysis, propensity score matching
  • Ability to communicate complex research concepts and findings to a wide range of audiences
  • Previous experience in research in the areas of brands, media and youth
  • Previous experience of research in a development setting, especially in Southern Africa
