Job Description

MwAPATA Institute is an independent policy think tank in Malawi. The Institute is engaging the Government of Malawi, private sector, and civil society stakeholders in a program of applied policy analysis, capacity building, knowledge dissemination, and policy coordination on topics related to agriculture, natural resource management, and rural development. The ultimate goal of the MwAPATA Institute is to accelerate the adoption of effective Malawian-led policies and programs to drive broad-based agricultural transformation, diversification and improved smallholder incomes and nutrition in Malawi. The Institute will play a leading role in identifying strategies that will improve the investment climate, promote diversification, and promote increased commercialization and productivity within Malawi’s agricultural sector and then build consensus and support for their implementation. Among other things, this would include building coalitions of private and public sector support to overcome barriers to private investment; assisting government to develop and implement improved policies and regulatory frameworks; and capacity strengthening in policy analysis and communication.

The MwAPATA Institute wishes to recruit highly motivated, proactive service-oriented and energetic individuals to fill the following position based in Lilongwe:


Position: Finance and Administration Manager (1Post)



The successful candidate will head the Finance and Administration Unit of the Institute. He/she will be responsible for the day-to-day financial, human resource and administrative operations of the Institute. He/she will report directly to the Executive Director, MWAPATA Institute.

Key tasks shall include

  • Provision of effective and prudent management of financial, accounting and human resources.
  • Formulation of sound financial policies, procedures and accounting systems that ensure effective management of funds.
  • Ensure efficient provision of corporate services for the delivery of research functions.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations, and other financial, human resource and procurement laws and regulations.
  • Ensure timely preparation of budgets and implementation of budgetary controls.
  • Ensure compliance with donors’ requirements.
  • Ensure timely preparation of financial management reports.
  • Liaise closely with the Food Security Group, Michigan State University, on matters related to finance and accounting.

Qualifications and skills
  • Hold a first Degree in Accounting or Accounting profession certification such as ACCA, CIMA, and CPA.
  • Should be a registered member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM).
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience at a senior level in a busy accounting environment and have full knowledge of payroll administration.
  • Highly numerate, with an ability to prepare works, services and supplies contracts and reconcile transactions.
  • Computer literate, with a sound working knowledge of a full range of Microsoft Office Package and electronic accounting systems and project accounting.
  • Specific experience and demonstrable knowledge of donor financial reporting.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of Malawi business and tax regulations.
  • Have an understanding of foreign exchange accounting, budget processing and the budgetary process and vote book control.
