Job Description

The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) is a center in the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health that works in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco. I-TECH has projects in more than 20 countries, and its worldwide staff work with local ministries of health, universities, non-governmental organizations, medical facilities, and other partners to support efficient, well-ordered health care systems that provide high quality care to all citizens.  I-TECH Malawi provides technical assistance to the Malawi Ministry of Health and its partners to support human resource development, health systems strengthening, HIV care and treatment, and HIV surveillance for epidemic control.

I-TECH has been privileged to provide technical support to the Government of Malawi Ministry of Health (MoH), since 2008, through seconded senior Technical Assistants, Program Officers and Public Health Fellows.  The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) was established in 2002 at the University of Washington in Seattle.  I-TECH is funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Global HIV and TB (CDC-DGHT) under the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

I-TECH Malawi wishes to recruit highly qualified and experienced person to fill the following position



The Laboratory Officer will report to the Lab Manager through Lab Advisor and assist in HIVDR genotyping, recency and other surveillance samples testing, planning, reporting and foster good clinical Laboratory practices.


  • Provide critical support to the National HIV Reference Laboratory in performing HIV-related laboratory analysis: HIV serology, HIV viral load testing, HIV drug resistance genotyping using Sanger sequencing method.
  • Developing Standard Operating Procedures adapted to the local service delivery context, for example for sample handling, storage and transportation, sample processing and analysis, quality controls and management
  • Maintain a safe working environment in the workplace through promotion and following of safety practices
  • Verify lab results and ensure that results are correctly captured in the study database and assist with routine data analysis;
  • Support in preparation of PT and QC samples for recency surveillance, Coordinate the distribution of PT and QC panels to districts or regions
  • Prepare regular progress reports.
  • Monitor recency related supplies and provide update from time to time
  • Perform DNA/RNA samples extraction and HIV viral load testing for all HIV recent infections
  • Participate in EQA for competence and implementation of quality management systems (QMS)
  • Work on any other duties as assigned

  • Degree in Biomedical Sciences/Technology from a recognized institution
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience in providing laboratory work in a busy Laboratory
  • Basic training in HIV drug resistance genotyping.
  • Skills and Knowledge in bioinformatics
  • Basic training and adequate knowledge in the implementation of QMS
  • Registered with medical council of Malawi

  • Some experience in implementing HIVDR validation and genotyping
  • Experience with lab-related data management systems
  • Basic experience in data analysis using bioinformatics soft ware
