 Malawi Program Manager 

Breakthrough ACTION is a 5-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). In Malawi, the Breakthrough ACTION team is developing solutions to support health providers to counsel clients effectively on family planning optionsand is recruiting for a program manager to lead this work. 

The Program Manager will play an active role in managing a feasibility pilot and subsequent rigorous testing of behaviorally-informed solutions to improve the overall health of Malawians. In close collaboration with the Breakthrough ACTION team, the Program Manager will be responsible for coordinating with in-country partners and stakeholders, facilitating both pilot and field testing and data collection activities, and monitoring implementation to ensure successful execution of the proposed research protocol. The Program Manager will work in close collaboration with nested providers, clinicians and nurses specializing in long-term family planning methods, and the nurse in-charge at local health facilities.

The position is based in Lilongwe. The Program Manager will travel within Lilongwe as well as to Machinga including overnight stays during field visits.  

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Facilitating pilot and field testing of designs along with data collection activities; 
  • Training health providers in the use of behaviorally informed designs along with monitoring implementation to ensure successful execution of the proposed research protocol;
  • Coordinating communications with US-based staff and in-country partners and stakeholders;Transferring knowledge and best practices for applying behavioral insights to key stakeholders.

 

Minimum Qualifications 

We seek organized, analytical, resourceful, and responsive candidates. A passion for understanding human behavior, pursuing innovation, and promoting the social good is critical, but prior expertise or training in behavioral economics or psychology is not required. Specific qualifications include:

  • Master’s or equivalent plus a minimum of 4 years of work experience, or bachelor’s with 6 or more years of relevant work experience;
  • Strong project management skills;
  • Experience conducting or overseeing quantitative and/or qualitative data collection;
  • Experience conducting or overseeing implementation monitoring; including part-time staff, field-based, and temporary staff. 
  • Available and willing to travel on a flexible schedule as needed (within Malawi); 
  • Full professional fluency in English and Chichewa (written and verbal) is required, knowledge of Yao is an extra asset;
  • Resourceful, motivated and able to thrive in ambiguous settings;
  • Knowledge of the Malawian health care system; 
  • Proficiency with core business software tools (e.g. PowerPoint, Excel, Word, etc.) 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Project management experience in health care in Malawi;
  • Experience with USAID-supported projects;
  • Knowledge of behavioral science and/or human-centered design methodology;
  • Experience with ethical review process for human subjects research.
