Job Description

MwAPATA Institute is an independent policy think tank in Malawi. The Institute is engaging the Government of Malawi, private sector, and civil society stakeholders in a program of applied policy analysis, capacity building, knowledge dissemination, and policy coordination on topics related to agriculture, natural resource management, and rural development. The ultimate goal of the MwAPATA Institute is to accelerate the adoption of effective Malawian-led policies and programs to drive broad-based agricultural transformation, diversification and improved smallholder incomes and nutrition in Malawi. The Institute will play a leading role in identifying strategies that will improve the investment climate, promote diversification, and promote increased commercialization and productivity within Malawi’s agricultural sector and then build consensus and support for their implementation. Among other things, this would include building coalitions of private and public sector support to overcome barriers to private investment; assisting government to develop and implement improved policies and regulatory frameworks; and capacity strengthening in policy analysis and communication.

The MwAPATA Institute wishes to recruit highly motivated, proactive service-oriented and energetic individuals to fill the following position based in Lilongwe: two (2) Research Fellows.

Positions: Research Fellows (2 Posts)

The successful candidates will plan, coordinate and implement research programmes in accordance with Institute’s strategy, policy, and procedures and funder requirements. He/she will create research teams and collaborations that understand the Institute’s research direction; and communicate direction of research in order to inspire team members to reach research goals. The Research Fellow will closely work with the Institute Leaders and assist in developing a strong MwAPATA Institute visibility and support establishment of the Institute as a strong partner to Government, the NGO community and private sector in agriculture. This will involve assisting in the day-to-day implementation of project field activities, including monitoring of progress, learning and policy dialogue events and support in the field and performing the following specific duties:

Key tasks shall include:

  • Conducting research and policy analysis on agricultural, natural resources management, and rural development policy issues.
  • Preparing research reports, working papers, policy briefs, and publishable journal manuscripts.
  • Writing of research proposals and contributing to the Institute’s fundraising efforts.
  • Translating research into concrete policy guidance and support for implementation.
  • Identifying opportunities for private investment and entry into key agricultural commodity value chains with the potential to drive agricultural transformation in Malawi.
  • Organizing and participating in workshops, seminars, and conferences for dissemination of research outputs and outcomes.
  • Preparing research project budgets.
  • Peer reviewing research work by other researchers.
  • Collaborating with other local, regional and international research institutions on policy analysis issues.
  • Coordination an collaboration with Government Ministries and Departments.
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications and skills
  • A Doctorate Degree in Development Economics, Agricultural Economics, Economics, Policy Management, or related field with a minimum of 3 years post-graduate experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Proficiency in quantitative research methods, the analysis of household survey data, and the use of STATA, SPSSS or similar statistical analysis software packages.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively design and implement survey data collection activities.
  • Specific experience in relating to government and private sector as key stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability and experience in managing internal and external relationships with project teams, donors, and collaborators.
  • Ability and experience in managing internal and external relationships with project teams, donors, and collaborators.
  • Experience working in multi-cultural teams.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and at least one Malawian local language.
