Job Description

Habitat for Humanity Malawi (HFHM), affiliated to Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit Christian organization aiming at improving housing conditions in Malawi. HFHM was established in 1986 and has assisted over 41,000 families through different housing solutions. in addition to housing, HFHM has undertaken water and sanitation projects in pert-urban areas of Lilongwe, Chikwawa and zuzu.

Habitat for Humanity Malawi (HFHM) is in the process of recruiting volunteers, interns and temporary staff to support Disaster Risk Response and Reduction (DRRR), Volunteer Relations, WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEAL) and Finance departments

Volunteers Relations Interns

Department: Programs

Reporting : The Intern will report to the VR Coordinator

Duty Station : Lilongwe

Main responsibilities

  • Creates/develops volunteer programmes on a national level with the support and inputs of the Area Offices.
  • Reviews and updates the standardized documents, orientation materials and emergency information for hosting teams.
  • Trains and monitors all staff and local partners on the various programs developed.
  • Serves as main HFH Malawi contact for all sending program coordinators and international volunteer team leaders.
  • Develops annual hosting plans for Global Village and Domestic teams.
  • Liaises with programme and project teams to develop team budgets and hosting plans.
  • Implements Global Village programmes in Malawi in accordance with HFHI minimum standards for hosting teams.
  • Directly supports volunteers to mitigate risk and enriches the building experience by staying with teams in the project community during in-country building period.
  • During non-hosting seasons, supports programme and RDC initiatives as called upon, especially in the areas of donor development and maintenance (newsletter publication, thank you letters, special events)
  • Helps formulate GV related policies and procedures such as accepting team proposals, gift-giving policies, etc.
  • Coordinates with construction supervisors or. site safety/ procedures/ work plans.
  • Responsible for GV Finance/ Donation Coordination
  • Responsible for complying to Area Office Reports & Evaluation Procedure
  • Other duties as called upon by Supervisor and Senior Leadership Team.

Educational Qualification

  • University Degree in International relations, travel/ tourism/hospitality, Community Development, Humanities, International Relations Communication or related fields.
  • Previous experiences in working with international community and understanding and development of risk mitigation strategies and implementation.
  • Previous experience in volunteer recruitment and support activities

Skills and Competencies Required

  • Excellent networking and communication skills to manage a variety of professional relationships.
  • Excellent spoken and written English language skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills via written, face-to-face and virtual systems (email, phone, etc)
  • Previous experiences in creating and maintaining operational procedures and manuals.
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks and communications between volunteer teams, HFH Malawi programme and project units and partners.  Plan & Budget development and accountability; Reporting results against budgets
  • Self-motivated, flexible, able to work as necessary to support role requirements. Works Well under pressure and independently within agreed parameters; Willingness and ability to travel and stay in communities with team during their stay (overnight in community for up to 2 weeks)
  • Strong team-building, participation and support skills; effective and respectful cross-culturally
  • Very good problem-solving skills and ability to coach others in problem solving techniques
  • Computer literate in MS Word, MS Excel, virtual communication, current windows applications, etc.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Volunteer Management: Recruitment, scheduling & problem solving
  • Strong Organizational & Administrative Skills Ability to deal with stress & meet deadlines
