Job Description

The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) is a center in the University of Washington’s Department of Global Health that works in partnership with the University of California, San Francisco. I-TECH has projects in more than 20 countries, and its worldwide staff work with local ministries of health, universities, non-governmental organizations, medical facilities, and other partners to support efficient, well-ordered health care systems that provide high quality care to all citizens.  I-TECH Malawi provides technical assistance to the Malawi Ministry of Health and its partners to support human resource development, health systems strengthening, HIV care and treatment, and HIV surveillance for epidemic control.

I-TECH has been privileged to provide technical support to the Government of Malawi Ministry of Health (MoH), since 2008, through seconded senior Technical Assistants, Program Officers and Public Health Fellows.  The International Training and Education Center for Health (I-TECH) was established in 2002 at the University of Washington in Seattle.  I-TECH is funded by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Division of Global HIV and TB (CDC-DGHT) under the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

I-TECH Malawi wishes to recruit highly qualified and experienced person to fill the following position



Laboratory Technicians will report to the NHRL Lab Manager through the Lab Advisor and assist in HIVDR testing, recency and other surveillance samples testing.


  • Provide critical support to the National HIV Reference Laboratory in performing HIV-related laboratory analysis such as HIV serology, HIV viral load testing, HIV drug resistance genotyping using Sanger sequencing method.
  • Developing Standard Operating Procedures adapted to the local service delivery context, for example for sample handling, storage and transportation, sample processing and analysis, quality controls and management
  • Perform Sample extraction and viral load testing for all HIV recent infections
  • Maintain a safe working environment in the workplace, by following safety practices and independently follow associated laboratory protocols to ensure quality of results
  • Ensure laboratory specimen test results are correctly captured in the study database and assist with routine data analysis;
  • Preparing HIV recency proficiency panels and quality controls
  • Participate in EQA for competence and implementation of quality management systems (QMS)
  • Work on any other duties as assigned


  • Diploma or Degree in Biomedical Sciences from a recognized institution
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience working in molecular laboratory
  • Basic training in HIV drug resistance genotyping and bioinformatics
  • Having knowledge and experience in implementing QMS
  • Registered with medical council of Malawi
  • Some experience in implementing HIVDR validation and genotyping testing
