Job Description

MwAPATA Institute is an independent policy think tank in Malawi. The Institute is engaging the Government of Malawi, private sector, and civil society stakeholders in a program of applied policy analysis, capacity building, knowledge dissemination, and policy coordination on topics related to agriculture, natural resource management, and rural development. The ultimate goal of the MwAPATA Institute is to accelerate the adoption of effective Malawian-led policies and programs to drive broad-based agricultural transformation, diversification and improved smallholder incomes and nutrition in Malawi. The Institute will play a leading role in identifying strategies that will improve the investment climate, promote diversification, and promote increased commercialization and productivity within Malawi’s agricultural sector and then build consensus and support for their implementation. Among other things, this would include building coalitions of private and public sector support to overcome barriers to private investment; assisting government to develop and implement improved policies and regulatory frameworks; and capacity strengthening in policy analysis and communication.

The MwAPATA Institute wishes to recruit highly motivated, proactive service-oriented and energetic individuals to fill the following position based in Lilongwe:

Position: Research Assistants (2 Posts)

The successful candidates will provide programme-level technical and logistical support to field activities for the Institute. The Research Assistant will closely work with the Institute’s senior researchers. This will involve assisting in the day-to-day implementation of project field activities, including monitoring of progress, learning and policy dialogue events and support in the field, and performing the following specific duties:

Key tasks shall include:

  • Designing and implementing data collection activities and analysis. This includes designing and developing data collection instruments, assembling data collection field teams, and supervision of data collection, entry and data cleaning activities
  • Preparing timely and accurate reports.
  • Organizing seminars, workshops, and conferences as and when required.
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Qualifications and skills
  • At least a Masters Degree in Development Economics, Agricultural Economics, Economics, Policy Management, or related field.
  • Proficiency in quantitative research methods, the analysis of household survey data, and the use of STATA, SPSSS or similar statistical analysis software packages.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively design and implement survey data collection activities.
  • Proficiency in computer assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) programming.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and at least one Malawian local language.
